Transparency is a word we hear and read regularly, but what does it actually mean and why is it so important in practice?
Not merely a buzzword used in advertising, increased transparency is a proven way to improve nearly every measurable business output and is something we generally believe to be an intrinsic part of our democracy, and closer to home, our relationships.
The word comes from medieval Latin, transparentia, meaning ‘shining through’, with the modern word taking on a variety of meanings. The most relevant definition, as described by the Cambridge English Dictionary, is, “a situation in which business and financial activities are done in an open way without secrets, so that people can trust that they are fair and honest”.
We believe that if individuals have greater access to information it enables them to make better investment decisions. This is why we factor transparency into every aspect of our business model and our interactions with our clients.
With our investments you are the one calling the shots as to where your funds are going. You decide upon the investment that suits your requirements and we have a number of sustainable investment opportunities available, so once you have selected a company or project that appeals to you, you can find out exact what your money is being used for.
We offer investors full disclosure about the companies you are investing into, and the full information can be read in the corresponding offering document, which pertinently this highlights absolutely all of the risks involved.
Aside from all the risks highlighted in the offering document as mentioned above, you will find the general risks of investment on our website.
At both the start and end of the investment process we require investors go through measures to ensure they understand the risk and terms of our investments: at the beginning, in the form of an appropriateness test where investors need to answer a series of questions correctly and to finalise the investment process we undertake a compliance call which is much the same, confirming that the risks and terms of the investment are understood.
Making sustainability transparent
We understand that a number of our investors share our passion for a more sustainable future and would like to see their money working. Consequently, we offer visits to the various available projects where you can also meet the team and take a tour of the site. We want to highlight the great work we believe the companies we fund are doing in helping to make the successful transition from a carbon-based economy to a renewable one.
Ultimately, we believe that transparency empowers our clients to make the right investment decision for themselves – as the old adage goes – scientia potentia est – knowledge is power.
